Banner and Icon

Banner and Icon

Using adobe Photoshop we constructed a banner and icon which will later be uploaded onto our media blogs. They were to be designed to reflect us as an individual and were to be placed along the top of the blog as all successful brands/magazines have a banner and an icon. My final product is depicted above.

Semiotics

Semiotics

These are signs which are broken up into three categories:
Iconic: looks like what it represents
Symbol: needs to be culturally learned
Indexical: suggestive and connected to what they represent

Different semiotics hold very different importance, for example symbols are used for branding such as Converse, we have to culturally learn what the emblem represents.

Airbrushing

Airbrushing

This tool artificially changes the completion of an image. In our task our goal was to remove any blemishes or un-even skin tones. This also enables to change characteristics such as eye and hair colour. It is most commonly used in adverts and photographs.

Fonts

Fonts

The use of fonts can enhance an image drastically. The style of font generally has a theme or reason behind it. By using the brush tool and selecting a new layer and soft light I drew rainbow of sorts to add effect to the picture and make it resemble an upcoming “Skins” episode on E4. Effects like this one add effect to the picture and help it to tell a story and tell us what exactly is going on in the image.

Colour Effects

Colour Effects

The colour effect is an effective way of using colours in a photo without dominating the photo.Colour filtering is where we make certain colours stand out compared to all the others. This is a technique I learnt in my in the second lesson.

Cloning Images

Cloning Images

In my second lesson, we learnt a technique in Photoshop which was cloning an image. We did this on a photograph of students from SMS. The intention for this was to remove corporate branding from the image so that it could be used in the school prospectus. Below are the two images, before and after.

Before After

It can be seen that, not only have brand names such as “Dior”, “Zara” and “Just Do It” been removed, but the lady on the stairs has also been removed so that she does not take away the reader’s attention.
